A first step in any treatment is to praise or reward the child if it has been left dry overnight. Punishing when things go wrong only makes the child more nervous. This increases bedwetting and the child prefers to deny the problem rather than help find a solution. Bear in mind that it is not a matter of course to praise children in all cultural environments! This is more difficult to discuss in their family situation, especially with foreign patients.

The bedwetting alarm can be used from the age of 6 years. It is important that the child himself wants to get rid of bedwetting and therefore sees it as a problem. The child must be sufficiently motivated to do something against bedwetting. In some cases, the child is already motivated at a younger age. The bedwetting alarm can be used earlier, but it is recommended that the child is at least 6 years old.
Operation of the bedwetting alarm
The bedwetting alarm is a device that is connected with a wire to a sensor brief. Before going to bed, the alarm clock is installed by the child together with the parents. As soon as a few drops appear on the bottom at night, the alarm clock goes off. The child gets out of bed, turns off the alarm clock, pee in the toilet and replaces the used pants. Then the child activates the alarm clock again. In this way, the child is always warned when the bladder is full. If it is very difficult for the child to wake up, the parent will wake up the child, e.g. with a wet washcloth on his/her forehead. After a few nights, the child will wake up more quickly. It is very important that the child is really awake, otherwise you will teach the child to bedwetting. The child should not go to the toilet sleep walking at night, but follow all the steps. Teach the child upfront exactly what to do. The child should go to sleep with the idea "I need to wake up from the bedwetting alarm, when I hear the sound, I jump out of my bed". If the bed is wet anyway, the child has to (help with) changing.
Duration of use
It is better not to use the bedwetting alarm for more than four months, unless you consult a general practitioner or social worker. Stop when the child has been dry for 2 weeks. Keep the alarm clock for another week.
